How to manage anxiety and panic attacks

Within the Fair Lawn Mom Chat, there was a conversation about how to manage anxiety and how to cope with panic attacks. Since all the advice was so incredibly helpful, I thought to myself "why not compile this advice into one central spot". Therefore, this blog post is a combination of advice from many of our members. After each helpful tip, you will notice parentheses with a member's name that suggested that advice.

Tips to Manage Your Anxiety:

  1. Start with lots of deep breaths. Slow, long deep breaths are essential to calming yourself. (Aswathy)

  2. Do something that makes you happy and puts you in a flow state. For example, reading, drawing, knitting, etc. - things that you can do and not even realize time is passing. (Aswathy)

  3. Take a relaxing bath. Take a moment just for yourself. Play calming music, dim the lights, and use essential oils/aroma therapy. (Shahida & Sam) Alternatively, if you don't have time for a bath, you can take a shower with the lights off, soft music, and candles. (Ellie & Aswathy)

  4. Relieve physical stress. You can often feel the anxiety build up in your body; therefore, relieving this physically through yoga or exercise can help relieve mental stress as well. (Sam)

  5. Meditation. Taking your mind off of whatever is giving you stress is key. Therefore, meditation could help clear your mind. There are many guided meditation "classes" on YouTube that could help you center yourself. (Sundri & Sam)

  6. Play music. Music has an amazing power to change your mood. Have you ever been upset and then an amazing song comes on and your body can't resist moving? Therefore, playing happy music, calming music, or any music that you enjoy could help relieve anxiety. (Aswathy)

  7. Lemon wedges. Sucking on a lemon wedge can help you focus and re-center yourself as the bitter sensation distracts you from the panic attack. (Sundri)

  8. Drink Tea. Teas, especially herbal and ginger, usually help calm the nerves. (Shahida)

Additional helpful resources:

1. "The.holistic.psychologist" on Instagram has a lot of great information! (Stephanie) One great practice that she teaches for everyday mediation is linked here.

2. Additionally, the app called "Insight Timer" has a lot of great meditation and soothing music. (Sundri)

3. Binaural Beats on Spotify is also very calming and helpful. (Anna)
